Need for new swimming pool in Castlebar highlighted

The urgent need for a new swimming pool in Castlebar was highlighted at the annual budget meeting of the Town Council this week. Councillor Eugene McCormack brought up the issue that the council had budgeted to spend €230,000 this year on the swimming pool in the town, which was currently closed for repair and had been over the Christmas period. Cllr McCormack told the meeting: “We have budgeted a lot of money for the pool again here and it’s something we should highlight, the sad state the pool is in and its need of a proper upgrade.” Independent Cllr Frank Durcan told the meeting that the pool should never have been put into Castlebar when it was and that the pool had been previously rejected by Kerry County Council before it was installed in Castlebar. Fine Gael Cllr Noreen Heston asked the meeting if there was any chance that the town could enter into a public private partnership with one of the private pools in the town as the pool cannot cope with the demand that it has which often outstrips the supply it can provide.

Westport drops rates by two and a half per cent

Westport Town Council has struck a rate of 64.84, which makes it the lowest rate multiplier in the county. This rate was agreed at a budget meeting on Thursday night where councillors proposed a 2.5 per cent reduction on rates in the town. This, according to the Cathaoirleach of the town, Councillor Myles Staunton, sends out the message that “Westport is open for business”.

The purpose of the evening is to strengthen relationships between the electorate and the service providers and local politicians.

Ballina Town Council briefs

Independent Ballina town councillor Peter Clarke will travel to Scranton, Pennsylvania, to represent the town at its St Patrick’s Day parade on March 13. He was proposed by Cllr Francis McAndrew and seconded by Mayor Mary Kelly. Independent councillor Gerry Ginty told the meeting: “As one who usually objects to these type of trips, I don’t to this one as there is only one person going and with Cllr Clarke out there promoting the Clarke Collection, it could have a major pay off in the long run to the town.”

Potholes fill roads discussion at Ballina area meeting

The condition of the roads in the Ballina area after the recent cold spell led to a lengthy discussion at this week’s Ballina electoral area meeting. “The national roads inspector was in the area yesterday (Tuesday), to see the damage that has been caused,” senior engineer for Mayo County Council Noel Burke told the meeting. “We have asked him to allow us to be as flexible as possible with the local road grants that we have applied for. We hope they will let us be discretionary on where we spend the money rather than just rely on the list of priorities we sent up before the cold spell set in.”
